Claim Filing Mistakes:

If something doesn’t go as planned on your trip, you may need to start a claim with the travel insurance company. Here are common claim mistakes you can try to avoid.

  • Medical Expense Documentation:  Keep all medical receipts incurred while abroad. To be eligible for reimbursement, the insurance company will need to verify your medical payments. Include the reason for your doctor visit, an itemized bill detailing the services received along with dates, and the provider's name and payment information. Any missing information may result in delays until the necessary details are provided.

  • Not Acquiring or Sending the Necessary Documents:  Basically, if something happens, get it documented!  For example, a medical expense or lost baggage will require documented proof in order to review your claim.  Make sure that medical receipts include all services rendered.

  • Not Filing a Police Report: Some benefits require a police report. For example, if your bags and passport are stolen, a police report is required to substantiate your claim.

  • Not Reading Your Plan Policy Document:  Get familiar with your plan’s coverage, exclusions, and limitations.

  • Opt for eClaimsFor a smoother experience, you should submit claims electronically online through the travel insurance company's website. This method not only speeds up processing but also reduces the chances of errors.

  • Hospitalization or Emergency Transportation Needed?:  You or someone needs to contact the travel insurance company immediately (see your ID card), so that their medical team can intervene on your behalf.

  • Baggage & Baggage Delay Claims: acquire reports from parties responsible (i.e. airline, cruise line, etc.) for loss, theft damage, or delay.  Sme claims may also require a police report.  Please obtain receipts for lost or damaged items.

  • Trip Delay Claims: acquire a statement from the party causing the delay (i.e. airline, cruise line, etc.) and receipts for expenses.

  • Trip Cancellation (pre-departure) or Trip Interruption (post-departure) Claims: provide your travel invoice, the cancellatoin or interruption date, original unused tickets or vouchers, the travel organizer's cancellation clause with regard to nonrefundable losses.  You will also be asked to provide proof of payment.

  • Additional Assistance Needed?:   If there are any questions or assistance required with a claim submission, you can reach out to the travel insurance company by simply calling the number on the ID card. A team of specialists is waiting to help!
